Devolia Geo
From Devolia.org wiki - EN
Devolia Geo (codename: geoservice) is a RPC web service (Remote Procedure Call). It provides user geolocation from its GPS coordinates or its IP number. The service returns the closest city / country. Actions with _weather also return the Weather.com ID of the nearest know city, making easy to provide geolocated weather information with Weather.com API.
It is also easy to use with Google Maps or as a mobile geolocation service (like on the iPhone, BlackBerry or Android phones).

How it works
Devolia Geo uses third-parties databases:
- GeoNames associates GPS coordinates to a city / country.
- GeoLite City from MaxMind associates IP to number to a city / country and GPS coordinates.
Accuracy
Devolia Geo accuracy depends on its databases.
- GeoNames features 2.6 million populated places
- GeoLite City Over offers a 99.5% accuracy on a country level and 79% on a city level for the US within a 25 miles radius.
Improve accuracy
MaxMind also provides a commercial version of its database, GeoIP City which offers over 99.8% accuracy on a country level and 83% on a city level for the US within a 25 mile radius..
Performances
Geolocation consumes a lot of resources, RAM and CPU time. Our install scripts automatically creates databases indexes to maximises the performances.
We recommand at least 2GB of RAM to insure a good quality of service.
